Smart meters cannot identify which appliances you are using, or when you are using them. Your meter will measure and report the amount of energy used or generated in your home on a half-hourly basis.
-
Are smart meters safe?
Yes, meters are provided by qualified meter suppliers in New Zealand and they must be approved and comply with all relevant regulations.
If you have questions about the safety aspect of your meter, we recommend you talk to the metering company. For your own personal safety, do not touch or tamper with the meter for any reason.
-
What is the difference between a read meter and smart meter?
Manual read meters only measure total consumption and do not record the time of your consumption. A meter reader will visit your property to record your usage.
Smart meters allow your usage to be recorded every half hour. Smart meters can be read remotely, and do not require access to your property for a meter read.
-
Why do I pay Just Energy (or other retailers) for the meter?
The Meter Equipment Providers charge the retailer for the use and maintenance of the meter at the property. This means you receive one invoice that includes metering charges rather than two invoices, one from the retailer and one from the metering company.
-
Who owns the meter at my property?
Most commonly the metering company who installed the meter, not the retailer.
